Memories of Prague

Left Vienna today.  An easy walk to the underground, easy transfer between stations, easy walk to the train platform, and promptly met by a security fellow who was dispatched to assist us.   So on to the train and out of the station right on time.  2.5 hours later we were rolling into Budapest after an uneventful ride with the exception that Laurel beat Emily in a game of crib which is rather unusual.  Before leaving the train station in Budapest we waited for some time at the international ticket office to purchase our Friday tickets to Zagreb.  We tried over several months to make contact with the Hungarian Rail office to no effect, resigning ourselves to purchasing once we arrived in the country.  Provided it all works we should arrive in Zagreb at a reasonable hour on Friday.......   Exiting the station in Budapest we were confronted with a massive construction zone and judging by some of the work we saw later in the day it looks like they are expanding the underground metro. The area around the station is a bit run down and grubby and I was beginning to wonder what we were getting into but a short time later we found our hotel and checked in for a short rest.  Later we wandered out and about down to the Danube. What an incredible city! Building after building of tired but ornate architecture very similar to walking about Prague.  Some buildings have clearly been restored, others need some work, and some are in a state in between.  Quite hot today (actually so far much of the trip has been above 30c) and this evening we had a bite down by the marginally cooler river with the rousing tones of a gypsy band livening up the evening.
